    At the launch ceremony of the Walmart Food Safety Collaboration Center on October 19, 2016, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation announced a $25 million dollar investment in research projects related to the applied sciences, education and communication intended to help improve food safety in China. Counted among these projects, Tsinghua University will collaborate with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the use of computer-based analytics to carry out real-time predictive analysis of adulteration risks in the food supply chain.

    The Food Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China was released, following revision, on April 24, 2015 and took effect on October 1 of the same year. This revision was made against the background of a relatively severe food safety situation in China. Therefore rather important revisions were made based on the objective reality, a fact which received positive feedback both internationally and domestically. It is known to many that the life of law lies in its implementation, as does its authority. Let me share three points about the implementation of this law.

    Meng Suhe, a member of the Walmart Food Safety Collaboration Center’s Board of Experts and President of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology, shared her insights into China’s food safety situation and trends, and stressed the importance of logistics and distribution for food safety. On the topic of public and consumer food safety education, she said that we “should use scientific facts to teach people how to protect themselves with their own hands.”

    On March 28, 2017, the Walmart Food Safety Collaboration Center (WFSCC) office officially opened in Beijing signaling the next step of Walmart’s commitment to improve food safety in China. The office launch was well-attended by Walmart executives, global partners of the WFSCC, academics and industry experts.
